Brilliant women are at the heart of Shapemaster’s success and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements as part of International Women’s Day 2021. Their work and dedication helps to improve the lives of older women around the world and we #ChooseToChallenge the UK leisure sector to go further and join us in our mission to help people remain fit and active in the second half of their lives.
Charissa Newsome – Corporate Marketing Manager
Charissa has led Shapemaster’s marketing since 2012, having previously served in management at a large medical device company. She brings her vast experience of marketing to NHS and private healthcare organisations and implementation of educational programmes for healthcare practitioners. Charissa’s work has led to important insights into the end users of Shapemaster fitness equipment and she’s passionate about demonstrating the social value that our equipment brings to public sector leisure and exercise therapy and rehabilitation.
Rachel Young – Physiotherapy Consultant
Rachel is an Associate Lecturer in Physiotherapy, Sport and Physical Activity at Sheffield Hallam University and she’s been an integral part of the team for the last 10 years. Her research with Shapemaster includes the application of the principles of power assisted exercise to the management of people with long term conditions and she supports the advancement of the equipment through R&D activities. Rachel works with the team to develop resources and deliver training events to promote optimal use of our specialist equipment.
Rachel is currently completing a part time PhD programme on the impact of power assisted exercise for people with stroke and she recently published a feasibility study and a systematic review of qualitative research on exercise for people with stroke. She is at the heart of R&D work to continue Shapemaster’s innovative journey in partnership with the Government supported Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre.
Rachel understands the exercise therapy needs of older people and has devised and delivered extensive training that adds years to life for the thousands of Shapemaster users around the UK and the world.
Donna Newton – Accountant
Donna is a Fellow Member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and has been an important member of our team since 2014. Her mastery of the numbers is at the foundation of our business and she provides a rock for our senior management team. Her expertise provides a vital steer in our strategic growth and we are constantly in awe of Donna’s Excel sheet wizardry!
Becky Laws – Marketing Assistant
Becky joined Shapemaster just over a year ago to support us across various departments. She’s plays a vital role in supporting the company with many marketing, social media and admin tasks and she complements the team with her adaptability and has helped us to remain extremely responsive during a very challenging year. She’ll turn her hand to any request, and she has been the bubbly voice at the end of our company phone ensuring every incoming enquiry is dealt with in an efficient and friendly manner.
Alexandra Perrior – Sales Manager
Alex Perrior joined us in January and brings with her a wealth of experience having worked with some of the world’s leading fitness equipment suppliers since 2008, including Precor, Wattbike and most recently Life Fitness. She has worked with many large national operators and brands as a key account manager, including Places Leisure, energie Fitness Clubs, Hilton Hotels and Anytime Fitness. As key account manager for Anytime Fitness Alex was instrumental in ensuring successful club openings and installations of Life Fitness equipment for new franchisees around the UK and in addition re-established the Hilton Hotels account.
Alex has made a huge contribution to Shapemaster already, bring her skills and experience to win new business, develop key accounts and help realise the significant growth ambitions of the company over the coming years.
Laura Childs – Leisure Marketing Manager
Laura also joined the team from Life Leisure in January 2021, a multi award-winning leisure trust, where she headed the marketing and communications department for 18 years. During her time at the trust, she oversaw the launch and development of numerous brands and physical activity programmes and was instrumental in driving campaigns which saw membership grow from 3.5k members to in excess of 19k.
Laura is a creative marketer with an extensive knowledge of the leisure sector and has made a significant impact to Shapemaster in a very short time. In partnership with Alex, Laura has led our initiative to help older, largely, women to remain fit and active at home during lockdown, whilst leading new campaigns to challenge perceptions of the leisure sector, particularly as we emerge from Covid.

Shapemaster fitness equipment opens access to exercise for many thousands of older people around the world. As 80% of our exercisers are women, the work of our team is challenging the leisure market to use the Covid disruption to think differently:
We at Shapemaster #ChooseToChallenge the leisure industry to think outside the 15% of people, typically younger adults, and welcome older people, mainly women, to their gyms. Shapemaster provides a physical activity intervention to build resilience in health, the fitness industry and the economy.
