CASE STUDY: Brandon Leisure & Health Hub, West Suffolk Council

Background

A £2 million transformation of existing facilities to create Brandon Leisure & Health Hub integrates fitness facilities and NHS services – complementing the Government’s drive to encourage physical activity to prevent or manage long-term conditions as people age.

The new wellbeing hub also accommodates community healthcare professionals including district nurses, physiotherapists and other community and hospital services.

Improvements include a new gym and free weights area, Shapemaster suite, changing rooms, Changing Places toilet, café, reception and health treatment rooms.

A Complete Solution

A 12-station suite of Shapemaster power assisted exercise machines was installed in November 2021 with a capital investment in the equipment of less than 3.6% of the overall transformation costs, including full training and support packs.

Shapemaster Sales Manager Alex Perrior provided full account management support to liaise with Abbeycroft Leisure, Alliance Leisure and their contractors to enable a smooth installation.

In partnership with TA6 powered by Alliance Leisure, Shapemaster provided a full onboarding schedule to ensure that power assisted exercise became an important asset in the business, which included training in the business elements such as marketing and customer retention.

Shapemaster’s comprehensive equipment training was provided as part of the installation, which developed the skillsets of the fitness professionals who took part.

And don’t just take our word for it…

“Our investment is designed to improve the health and happiness of residents in Brandon and the surrounding area. It is great to see the early work taking place in the hub is already having a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Cllr John Griffiths, West Suffolk Council leader

“By linking up health and leisure we aim to help patient recovery as well as their longer-term health and wellbeing, reducing the likelihood of people suffering from other health complications later on which could affect their quality and enjoyment of life.”

Cllr Jo Rayner, West Suffolk Council cabinet member for leisure, culture and community hubs

“I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and lupus and I was referred to Abbeycroft which has been an absolute game-changer for me.

“I would never have stepped foot in a gym before that referral, but working with the team at Brandon, who are so knowledgeable, has made a massive improvement in my symptoms and my quality of life, which is why I now squeeze in every session I possibly can. It’s such a wonderful facility.”

Marie Shepherd, a member of the new leisure and health hub

“I didn’t expect it to be so social. I’ve made new friends and we’ve been out for meals together and are looking forward to shopping together when the weather improves”

Sue, aged 72, a member of the new leisure and health hub

“Working closely alongside our health partners allows us to offer specialist classes and equipment which is suitable for people with long-term health conditions and mobility issues. Every day, we see first-hand the positive difference being physically active makes to people’s lives and the upgrade in facilities at Brandon is another exciting development with lots of opportunities for local people to do this.”

Warren Smyth, Chief Executive of Abbeycroft Leisure

“Abbeycroft Leisure’s new Wellbeing Hub is a vital step forward in the integration of health and physical activity. Our ongoing investment in our research partnership with the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University will feed directly into innovative facilities like these and generate strong social benefits.”
